keep it classy

in previous posts, i've discussed that one way advertising has really changed is the fact that models seem to be more exposed. but does this always sell a product?

in this ad from the 1960's, the model is wearing a swimsuit but it is not advertised in a suggestive way. personally, i find ads like these much more appealing and i would be more likely to buy a product that is not advertised in a scandalous way.

the selby at paris fashion week 2010

fashion has become about more than just people making clothes. it has evolved into an entire art community. during paris fashion week 2010, photographer todd selby demonstrated this expansion by living in the front window of the fashion botique colette. he lived in the window to promote his new book about creative people and the spaces in which they live. here is an interview he did with bkrw.com

this is a video i created with some advertisements that demonstrates just how much advertising fashion has changed over the years.

red lips. red nails. red dress?

this is a classic fashion advertisement from the 1980's
to sell this particular necklace, the features of the woman shown to the left are being used in interesting ways. as we are all well aware, big hair was a huge deal in the 80's. this is accurately displayed in the ad. make up was also bigger, but maybe not so much better in the 80's. this woman's red lips are definitely something that draws attention, as well as her red nails. her eye make up also draws attention and makes her seem seductive. not only this, but we are not able to see if she is wearing a shirt or not. in previous years, advertisements as scandalous or revealing as this would not have been published. this is just another example of how much advertising fashion has changed over time.

chanel 1956 and 1976

i wanted to compare the differences in these two chanel ads

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
this one is from 1956
in it, the man and woman are both dressed appropriately for the season with their long coats. this was a classic trend in the 50's.
the body language in this ad seems to be a little timid. the woman is holding onto the man's arm in an almost shy manner.

this is an ad from 20 years later in 1976
again, it is of a man and woman who are both dressed in a classy way. the woman's dress is form fitting, but not revelaing, which was not always the case in the 1970's.
however, the body language is this ad is much more playful. they both seem to be laughing as the woman hugs the man. this is a perfect example as to how portaying people in advertising has changed over time.

change in fashion and advertising

yes, you caught me.
i'm posting this is class :D
i've finally come to the conclusion that my blog is going to be about fashion and advertising.
i want to look at how advertising what we wear has changed over the past 50 years. the style of our clothing has changed, obviously. with that change, comes the changing in the advertising. i want to compare what specifically has changed over time in the way clothing is advertised. some of my points may focus on models, atmosphere, and style
